At Kingsley Community Primary School, we believe that some of the most powerful learning happens through experience. Children learn not only through what they are taught, but through what they do, discover, explore and experience for themselves. For this reason, experiential learning is an important part of our curriculum and our commitment to developing the whole child.
We deliberately enrich our academic curriculum with meaningful opportunities both within and beyond the classroom. Visits and visitors, clubs, performances, competitions, practical challenges, outdoor learning, community experiences and special events give our children opportunities to apply their knowledge, develop new skills and discover interests and talents. We want children to understand that learning happens everywhere: in school, in our local community and in the wider world.
Our Adventure Road Maps bring this commitment to life. From Red Room and Reception through to Year 5 and 6, every child follows an age-appropriate journey of carefully chosen experiences. The Road Maps are designed to become progressively more challenging as children grow in confidence and independence. Early experiences develop curiosity, self-care and exploration, while later experiences increasingly encourage children to communicate, create, collaborate, take responsibility and contribute to the lives of others. For example, children progress from cooking alongside an adult and learning to use a knife and fork, to preparing food more independently; and from enjoying rhymes and puppet shows to performing, debating, publishing their writing and reading to younger children.
The experiences have been chosen to give our children breadth of opportunity. Across their Adventure Road Maps, children encounter the arts, sport, science and nature, practical life skills, different cultures and faiths, community life, performance, communication, safety and the wider world. They might visit a place of worship, learn how to cross a road safely, perform on stage, conduct a scientific investigation, visit a museum, communicate in Spanish or represent the school in a sporting competition.
Through these experiences, we aim to develop much more than academic knowledge. Our children build confidence, independence, curiosity, resilience, creativity, communication and practical skills, while developing their social, moral, spiritual and cultural understanding. Just as importantly, they create memories, encounter new possibilities and develop a broader understanding and appreciation of the world around them.
Our Adventure Road Maps are our promise that every child at Kingsley will have opportunities to experience, participate, explore and achieve. We want our children to leave us not only knowing more, but having done more, experienced more and grown in confidence about what they can do next.
