Writing

At Kingsley, we help children find their voice and enjoy sharing their ideas through writing. Drawing Club in Reception and inspiring books throughout school spark imagination and build vocabulary. We teach spelling, handwriting and sentence skills step by step. Weekly Big Write lessons in Years 1 to 6 give children opportunities to put these skills into practice and grow into confident, independent writers.

Big Write

Children in Years 1 to 6 take part in a weekly Big Write lesson to build confidence and independence in writing. They explore different types of writing, from stories and letters to reports and persuasive texts. Through examples, shared writing and focused practice, children prepare to create their own extended pieces. Exciting topics and inspiring books give them a purpose for writing and opportunities to use their vocabulary, spelling and handwriting skills.

Handwriting

Our school handwriting scheme for KS1 is called Kinetic Letters. The children learn how to form letters based on how they have been grouped into letter families. Each letter family is introduced to the children through a story about two monkeys called Bounce and Skip. Bounce is a brave monkey and helps write the tall letters, whilst skip is a scared monkey and helps write the other letters.

In Years 3 to 6, we use the Nelson handwriting scheme to help children write clearly, confidently and fluently. Children learn letter joins in Year 3 and practise throughout KS2, developing consistent letter size, spacing and presentation. We encourage a comfortable pencil grip and good writing posture, providing extra support where needed. Children apply their handwriting skills across all subjects and may begin using a pen when they meet the school’s handwriting expectations.
