Eco/ Packed Lunch Letter
Wed 29 Mar 2023Eco Update.
Dear Parents/Carers,
Last summer Kingsley School was awarded an Eco Schools Green Flag for our efforts to become a more sustainable school. Well done Ms Smith and Eco Club who championed and organised this!
This year we are working towards a Plastic Free Schools award, aiming to reduce single use plastic in school. Our first items to eliminate will be any single use plastic bottles or cartons and crisp bags in packed lunches. Many children do already bring their water in a reusable bottle in their packed lunch and from next term we would like all packed lunches to contain a reusable bottle for their drink, or children can be given a glass of water with their lunch. Not only is this saving many items from the bin or recycling process, it also saves you money.
In addition to this Kingsley are currently working with North West Cancer Research who have been leading sessions with children throughout the school, teaching about eating healthy food and keeping healthy. As a result, we feel the children bringing a packed lunch should be aiming to bring a healthy lunch, for example a sandwich/pasta/rice dish, water (in a reusable bottle) and a piece of fruit. Children are aware that crisps and cakes are not healthy foods but treats, so should not be a regular item in their lunchbox, either a packet of crisps or a cake as an occasional treat.
School has never allowed any sweets or chocolate in packed lunches, (but these have been creeping in!) and as we are a nut free school so please do not send peanut butter/Nutella sandwiches or any other nut product.
There are lots of ideas for healthy and plastic free packed lunches on the back of this letter and websites where you can find more ideas.
We hope that you will join us at home also, to try to reduce your single use plastic and encourage your children to opt for healthy food choices.

Ramadan Arrangements 2023

Ramadan Arrangements 2023.
Dear Parents/ Carers,
As we approach a special time of year for many of our families and pupils, we would like to let you know our arrangements for Ramadan.
We know that many of our pupils like to join in with many of the activities that they see their parents and older siblings doing. One such activity is taking part in the fast.
In the past we have allowed a small number of older pupils in school to fast during the school day. A very small number of year 6 pupils, who have reached puberty, have been supported to fast or part fast on certain days. Not all of y6 chose to take part, it is usually only a small number of pupils. This is due to quite carefully considered safety reasons and particularly as not drinking during the day can cause many problems with concentration, energy levels, and with being able to join in all of their learning.
We will be able to offer some year 6 pupils our support to fast this year, should they want to. These pupils will need to bring in a letter, signed by their parent or carer which gives permission for them to fast during the school day. Y6 pupils who fast will only be able to do this on a day that they do not have a PE lesson. On these days children will NOT be able to fast.
Please talk to your child about this and let them know that for younger children it is very problematic for us to support fasting in school. It is not something that we can safely support, nor is it our normal practice. Therefore we do not allow pupils younger than y6 to fast in school. Only a handful of y 6 pupils take part (although I know some parents have been told by their pupils that ‘everyone’ does it- this is not the case!) I know that many pupils are able to feel that they are taking part, by part fasting, either during the evening or at weekends, under your supervision.
It looks likely that Eid Al Fitr will fall over a weekend in April this year. As you know we often try to plan our last inset day in the Summer with Eid. Potentially this will now be planned to coincide with Eid Al Adha in June, however I will let you know nearer the time.
We really appreciate your help in this matter. Should you wish to discuss this matter with me, please make an appointment via the main school office.
Kind regards, Mrs Whittaker

Ramadan Arrangements (Arabic)
Fri 10 Mar 2023

Strike days 15th/ 16th March
Wed 08 Mar 20239th March 2023
Proposed Industrial Action- Strike Days : March 15th and 16th
Dear Parents,
I was hoping for better news, but as things stand, the third and fourth days of strike action from one of the main teaching unions are still due to take place on Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th March. There is still the possibility that these may be ‘stood down’ but for now, we need to plan in a similar way to the previous days.
Given the expected staffing levels and the amount of uncertainty we have, this means that that school will be closed to students on that day. In Kingsley ALL of the class Teachers are in the NEU which is the Union which is striking, this is why school is fully closed for pupils, unlike some other schools where not all Teachers are on strike. However, there will be some further amendments around school meals that are different to the arrangements last time.
We are going to provide every child with a school meal on the strike days. These will be prepared by the kitchen staff during the morning and will be available for ALL pupils , whether they are entitled to free school meals or not. This is what we normally do for every pupil, so we are going to try to do this on strike days. Meals will be ready to be collected from the school hall between 12-1pm each day.
In order to plan for this we need to know the numbers needed, so if you require a packed lunch please use the slip below to book one. These are available for all children in Kingsley from Reception to year 6, for both days, but must be booked in advance.
I will of course let you know if there are any last minute changes or the strike is cancelled.
Kind regards,
Alison Whittaker, Head Teacher

Thanks fro Chair of Governors
Mon 06 Mar 20236.3.23
Dear Parents and Carers,
On behalf of all the Governors at Kingsley Primary, I would like to say a massive Thank You to all our parents and families for their overwhelming generosity in response to our appeal to help those affected by the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.
Our school community has always been extremely giving when raising money for various charities and good causes but the total amount raised far exceeded all expectations. We raised over £1150! Given that we are currently living in a financial crisis ourselves, makes this response even more remarkable.
We truly hope the money raised will help those affected to start to rebuild and move forward after this unimaginable tragedy. We are hoping to continue to look for other ways we as a school and community can help support those affected and will of course keep you updated on any future efforts.
Thank you all once again.
Jennifer Murshid,
Chair of Governors.
