Parent Governor Opportunity
Mon 25 Sep 2023Dear Parents/ Carers,
We have a hardworking team of governors at Kingsley, vital in the school’s continued success. At Kingsley Primary our constitution requires that we have 2 parent representatives as part of our Governing Body.
At present our parent representatives are:
Mrs A Elmi (parent of pupils in y6, y3 and YR)
Mrs F Sahed (parent of pupil in y6 )
Mrs Sahed’s 4 year term of office came to its end this month. She has been a parent Governor for 8 years and has helped the school through many important decisions (these include Covid lockdowns, many changes to SEND provision in school, two Ofsted inspections and my appointment as head teacher back in 2016!) Mrs Sahed feels that the time is right to let another parents stand in her place, so that she can focus on family commitments and support her daughter in the move to secondary school. She has been an amazing support to me as a Head and to the school, and I am sure you will join me in thanking her for her support and service to the school.
This does, however leave us with a vacancy!
Would you like to be a parent governor and join our hard working, loyal and committed group? If so you have the opportunity to put yourself forward for election. We look for someone committed to helping our school improve further, to become part of our team! To be eligible for election, parents or carers must have a pupil registered at Kingsley Primary in September 2023. If there are more than one nomination then there will be an election and I will inform you of the procedures.
Parents and carers make an invaluable contribution to the management of the school. They are part of the decision making process which directly affects the quality of education we provide for our children, and are a big part of Ofsted’s judgements about the quality of leadership in the school. If you feel that you can contribute, and can attend two full meetings per term, plus occasional committee meetings and other events, then please consider standing. Regular attendance to all meetings will be a vital requirement. These meetings take place from 3pm – 6pm as well as attendance at other events. You must be able to attend regularly, and the expectation is that you prioritise these meetings unless there is an emergency!
Further information which may make the role clearer, is available on request in the school office, and all new governors will attend training . A parent governor is elected for a four year term of office.
Nominating Yourself.
Please write a short letter in support of your nomination, which I can circulate to all parents This should tell us something of your experience and the skills or attributes you can bring to the role. This also gives you the opportunity to say something about yourself and why you would make a good governor—this statement is important.
All nominations should be returned to the school office by Monday 9th October, in order to help us move forward quickly with a Governor action plan.
Many thanks
Time Commitment
So how much of my time would be taken up by being a Governor at Kingsley School?
At Kingsley School we encourage our Governors to visit the school so that they can get to know the school, its staff and pupils. However, we recognise that people have other demands on their time too. The minimum requirements for a Governor at this school are:
- You will be required to attend two full Governor’s meetings each term (there are three terms) from 3pm-6pm. You should expect to attend every meeting.
- You will be expected to take part in training held by the local authority as an induction, and at least one other training per year held in school.
- You will be expected to take responsibility for one “Subject” (for example, Literacy, Numeracy, the Arts, safeguarding ) as a Link Governor and meet with the appointed member of staff, who is that subject co-ordinator, at least once a term – again, if you feel you have a particular area of expertise or interest, we would encourage you in that field.
- You will be expected to attend core training and encouraged to attend other training courses to develop your role as a School Governor – these are paid for by the school and take place in evenings and at week-ends as well as during the day, to accommodate anyone who is working.
- You will take part in Governor week, as well a other events during the school year, also supporting on interview , or other panels.
Other Requirements
- You will be able to read and understand complex information, including data sets, and reports from the Department of Education. You will be able to ask relevant questions about these and join in discussion.
- You will agree to 100% confidentiality in all of your dealings with school, ad be able to balance discretion alongside any social interaction you may have with staff and parents.
- You’ll need to understand your role clearly, a parent Governor gives a parents view on discussions and decisions, they DO NOT speak for or represent parents on individual matters, which still go via the normal channels of school policy and procedure. You’ll need to ensure you are clear about this with other parents who may ask you to do things for them!
- You’ll be interested in education and keen to help our school improve further.
- You be fully committed to Kingsley’s ethos and rules and support the school in all of its statutory (legal) responsibilities, including attendance, curriculum and financial.
- A clear, enhanced dbs safeguarding check and reference from an employer or character referee.
Being a Governor is a significant commitment, but it can be very rewarding. If you feel that you could meet the minimum commitments and would like to support Kingsley School, as it continues to change and improve, then we would like to hear from you!

Meeting for y6 Parents - Secondary School Applications
Tue 12 Sep 20237th September 2023
Meeting About Secondary Schools.
Dear Parent/Carer of pupils in Year 6,
I am writing with regard to the primary school to secondary school transfer procedure for September 2024. I hope everyone has been giving this matter some thought.
Those of you who are interested in selective schools should have checked out their websites or made visits and made any arrangements you need to for exams. These arrangements change every year and you will need to contact the school itself to find out how they are arranging admissions. This is particularly important for :
Bellerive St Hilda’s
Belvedere St Margret’s
Blue Coat King David
Liverpool College Archbishop Blanche
Other schools are community schools and you will apply through the local authority for them.
Further information on how to apply and the wider admissions process can be found online through the Liverpool City Council website at www.liverpool.gov.uk/admissions
We will be holding a meeting on Tuesday 12th September at 9.10am to help guide you through the application process and give our advice based on past experiences. Please make every effort to attend, as every year we find families who don’t seek advice from us whose children do not get their choice of school.
It is really important that you attend these meetings this week, otherwise it’s very difficult for us to help you later in the process. We have children every year who do not get a school because parents do not follow the process smartly! Please do not be one of those parents!
We will also have staff on hand this term to help you, and you can make an appointment for this via the main school office. If you can’t attend the meeting for any reason, please make sure you book an appointment to get advice from Mrs Ahmed or Ms Yafai, before you send off paperwork in October.
I look forward to seeing you on the 12th.
Kind regards,
Alison Whittaker, Head Teacher.

Kingsley Celebrates 75 Years of the NHS
Thu 13 Jul 2023Local Kingsley Community Primary School help the LWH celebrate 75 years of the NHS
Kingsley Community Primary School design a 75th Birthday card competition
As part of the 75th birthday celebrations we invited pupils from Kingsley Community Primary School to participate in a competition to design a 75th NHS birthday card. The competition sparked plenty of interest with over 100 entries.
Pupils were encouraged to design a card that characterised the various professions within the NHS and the rest was left entirely to the children’s imagination. As a result each entry was original with displays of bright colours and plenty of creativity. It will be extremely difficult to judge but we will be announcing the winners on Wednesday 12th July as we will be visiting the school to say thank you, announce the winners and also give a talk to the pupils about careers in the NHS.
Jenny Hannon, Chief Finance Officer and Deputy Chief Executive said, “It’s been great to see engagement from our younger generation. I thank the teaching staff and the parents that supported the children to participate in this celebration. We were absolutely delighted to receive over 100 cards, each of which was unique and wonderful in its own way.”

The winning entries…
Reception – Adyan Sohid
Year 3 – Abigail Hughes
Year 5 Muhammad Ali
Year 6 – Sarah Mohamood
Michelle Turner, Chief People’s Officer said, “It was an absolute pleasure to visit the school and present the winners with their certificate and voucher. All pupils designed the most outstanding of designs and it was a very difficult decision to choose the winners. We would like to thank the school for making us feel very welcome”
Pictured left to right are Kingsley Community Primary School winners Abigail Hughes, Muhammad Ali and Sarah Mohamood.
Head Teacher Mrs Whittaker said, “The children were delighted to be asked to take part in the 75th Birthday card design competition to help celebrate 75 years of the NHS, and it was a pleasure to welcome staff from the hospital who visited to talk about careers within the NHS, thank you to the Liverpool Women's"
The winning cards amongst other designs will be on displayed at the Liverpool Women’s.

5th July 2023
Dear Parents and Carers,
I am pleased to be able to give you some information about classes next year.
Some of you will know just how busy school has been, its definitely the most hectic time of the year, made even more so by our earlier finish in July. It was great to see everyone at our Eid party on Friday, a bit later than usual, but at least we managed to dodge the rain! We have also had lots of trips and visits this term , alongside sports week, art week, careers day and other curriculum enhancements .
Attached are the classes and staff who will be working with your children next year, as well as additional news about other staffing changes.
Current Split Classes Y3 and Y4
These classes have had the benefit of being taught by three, rather than two Teachers this year in order to boost their progress. They will now revert back to two classes for y4 and y5. Instead, our current y1 and y2 will be split into three teaching groups for the academic year 2023-4. This aims to further improve the impact we have on our pupils’ well being and academic achievement, by reducing some class sizes in targeted year groups. This is not easily done, it has taken a significant investment in both new buildings aswell as recruiting more teachers. This is not a permanent change and it does not mean Kingsley is going to a three form entry school. We envisage that we can definitely afford to do this for one more year, but we may not be able to do this from 2024 onwards- it all depends on our funding.
Staff leavers:
As always, this time of year is exciting as we get ready to make changes for September, but it is also bittersweet as we say farewell to staff who are moving on:
Miss Fealey, currently working in y2, has been a Learning Support Assistant at Kingsley for many years, and has known most of our pupils since they were little. She is leaving us to go and work in a school closer to home and to further pursue her academic dreams!
Also working in y2 is Miss Glenwright, although she has only been with us a year, she is leaving to go on an amazing travelling adventure, and we are all a little jealous!
Miss Bouzid has also worked at Kingsley for many years as a learning mentor , she has worked alongside so many of our pupils past and present and made a big difference in their lives, offering support when they’ve needed it and encouraging their well being and resilience. She is leaving to work in a different job, but also hoping to pursue further academic dreams!
Finally Ms Goodridge, is retiring from Kingsley. She won’t tell me the full details, but I know that she has been an enormous part of the old Granby school, as well as Kingsley- for over 30 years! That is a huge commitment. Many of our parents will remember her support in school and in the community. Our current children will miss her help and organisation in the school lunch hall in particular.
As always my thanks go to all of these staff for their loyalty, hard work and good humour. Schools are a funny place to work, they rely so much on goodwill, and on individuals like these investing in each other and the children. I am always sad to see people leave, but its also a sign of a healthy school when people move on to pursue promotion or further academic gain. I know you will join me in thanking them all and wishing them lots of luck.
New Staff:
We will be welcoming several new staff to our team.
Mr O’Shea will be joining us as our new mentor and PE coach.
Miss Lau will be joining as a new Learning Support Assistant in Year 4
Miss Baazab will be working with Year 2 as a new Learning Support Assistant
Miss Djaadoo will be working with us as a new cleaner
Continuing Support For Families
We are really passionate about offering our pupils the same experiences as other children get, no matter their or their families circumstances. In particular we look at how we can support School Dinners and Trips . Kingsley Governors took the decision some years ago to support EVERYONE as much as we could by NOT charging anyone for school meals. We are the only school in Liverpool that I know of who does this. As long as we can, we will continue to do this. Whether your family qualify for free school meals or not, we will offer every child a hot and nutritious meal at lunchtime, and use the schools’ own funding for this. A dinner would normally cost in the region of £2.80, per day, per child, so as you can see its quite an investment for us to make, and quite a saving for families. We also rarely charge for any trips or visits, and again, very few schools are able to commit to this. Each visit on a coach costs us a minimum of £10 per child, some of our trips cost double this, but we have taken the decision to have as many trips as we can and to either have no charge, or a minimal £1 or £2 charge to parents. We want our pupils to have no barriers to taking part in everything. I’m not sure some of you have been aware of our policy in this matter as you are so used to the offer that Kingsley makes, but we are committed to keeping this as long as we can. We may ask for small contributions this year as our budget is quite squeezed.
Uniform Help
You may remember last year that we gave everyone some free uniform to help with the cost of living crisis. We receive NO funding for this and unfortunately we simply can’t afford to do it again. We have had to really prioritise staffing. However we will be continuing to try to support those families without recourse to public funds (ie those seeking asylum or refugees) as much as we can, or anyone in significant hardship. We are also looking to expand our pre loved uniform bank, where you can still access donated uniform.
Can I also ask you at this point to remember that ALL Kingsley Pupils are expected to wear our uniform. You and your child have CHOSEN our school, you are therefore CHOOSING to accept our rules and ethos. Uniform is part of this- its for everyone, not just for some. Trainers MUST NOT be worn unless there are exceptional circumstances which you have addressed with the Head Teacher. If your child chooses to wear a hijab, it must be a purple or black all- in- one, not a long scarf and certainly not a long bejewelled or patterned one! (White hijabs are allowed in the summer as part of a summer uniform).
There will be more news before the end of term, thanks to all of you who have been attending meetings and events in school over the last few weeks.
Kind regards
Mrs Whittaker.

Eco/ Packed Lunch Letter
Wed 29 Mar 2023Eco Update.
Dear Parents/Carers,
Last summer Kingsley School was awarded an Eco Schools Green Flag for our efforts to become a more sustainable school. Well done Ms Smith and Eco Club who championed and organised this!
This year we are working towards a Plastic Free Schools award, aiming to reduce single use plastic in school. Our first items to eliminate will be any single use plastic bottles or cartons and crisp bags in packed lunches. Many children do already bring their water in a reusable bottle in their packed lunch and from next term we would like all packed lunches to contain a reusable bottle for their drink, or children can be given a glass of water with their lunch. Not only is this saving many items from the bin or recycling process, it also saves you money.
In addition to this Kingsley are currently working with North West Cancer Research who have been leading sessions with children throughout the school, teaching about eating healthy food and keeping healthy. As a result, we feel the children bringing a packed lunch should be aiming to bring a healthy lunch, for example a sandwich/pasta/rice dish, water (in a reusable bottle) and a piece of fruit. Children are aware that crisps and cakes are not healthy foods but treats, so should not be a regular item in their lunchbox, either a packet of crisps or a cake as an occasional treat.
School has never allowed any sweets or chocolate in packed lunches, (but these have been creeping in!) and as we are a nut free school so please do not send peanut butter/Nutella sandwiches or any other nut product.
There are lots of ideas for healthy and plastic free packed lunches on the back of this letter and websites where you can find more ideas.
We hope that you will join us at home also, to try to reduce your single use plastic and encourage your children to opt for healthy food choices.
Mrs Whittaker, Head Teacher

Ramadan Arrangements 2023
Mon 13 Mar 202312th .March 2023
Ramadan Arrangements 2023.
Dear Parents/ Carers,
As we approach a special time of year for many of our families and pupils, we would like to let you know our arrangements for Ramadan.
We know that many of our pupils like to join in with many of the activities that they see their parents and older siblings doing. One such activity is taking part in the fast.
In the past we have allowed a small number of older pupils in school to fast during the school day. A very small number of year 6 pupils, who have reached puberty, have been supported to fast or part fast on certain days. Not all of y6 chose to take part, it is usually only a small number of pupils. This is due to quite carefully considered safety reasons and particularly as not drinking during the day can cause many problems with concentration, energy levels, and with being able to join in all of their learning.
We will be able to offer some year 6 pupils our support to fast this year, should they want to. These pupils will need to bring in a letter, signed by their parent or carer which gives permission for them to fast during the school day. Y6 pupils who fast will only be able to do this on a day that they do not have a PE lesson. On these days children will NOT be able to fast.
Please talk to your child about this and let them know that for younger children it is very problematic for us to support fasting in school. It is not something that we can safely support, nor is it our normal practice. Therefore we do not allow pupils younger than y6 to fast in school. Only a handful of y 6 pupils take part (although I know some parents have been told by their pupils that ‘everyone’ does it- this is not the case!) I know that many pupils are able to feel that they are taking part, by part fasting, either during the evening or at weekends, under your supervision.
It looks likely that Eid Al Fitr will fall over a weekend in April this year. As you know we often try to plan our last inset day in the Summer with Eid. Potentially this will now be planned to coincide with Eid Al Adha in June, however I will let you know nearer the time.
We really appreciate your help in this matter. Should you wish to discuss this matter with me, please make an appointment via the main school office.
Kind regards, Mrs Whittaker

Ramadan Arrangements (Arabic) ترتيبات رمضان 2023
Fri 10 Mar 2023

Strike days 15th/ 16th March
Wed 08 Mar 20239th March 2023
Proposed Industrial Action- Strike Days : March 15th and 16th
Dear Parents,
I was hoping for better news, but as things stand, the third and fourth days of strike action from one of the main teaching unions are still due to take place on Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th March. There is still the possibility that these may be ‘stood down’ but for now, we need to plan in a similar way to the previous days.
Given the expected staffing levels and the amount of uncertainty we have, this means that that school will be closed to students on that day. In Kingsley ALL of the class Teachers are in the NEU which is the Union which is striking, this is why school is fully closed for pupils, unlike some other schools where not all Teachers are on strike. However, there will be some further amendments around school meals that are different to the arrangements last time.
We are going to provide every child with a school meal on the strike days. These will be prepared by the kitchen staff during the morning and will be available for ALL pupils , whether they are entitled to free school meals or not. This is what we normally do for every pupil, so we are going to try to do this on strike days. Meals will be ready to be collected from the school hall between 12-1pm each day.
In order to plan for this we need to know the numbers needed, so if you require a packed lunch please use the slip below to book one. These are available for all children in Kingsley from Reception to year 6, for both days, but must be booked in advance.
I will of course let you know if there are any last minute changes or the strike is cancelled.
Kind regards,
Alison Whittaker, Head Teacher
I would like to book the following packed lunches for collection:

2………………………………………………………………………. class

Thanks fro Chair of Governors
Mon 06 Mar 20236.3.23
Dear Parents and Carers,
On behalf of all the Governors at Kingsley Primary, I would like to say a massive Thank You to all our parents and families for their overwhelming generosity in response to our appeal to help those affected by the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.
Our school community has always been extremely giving when raising money for various charities and good causes but the total amount raised far exceeded all expectations. We raised over £1150! Given that we are currently living in a financial crisis ourselves, makes this response even more remarkable.
We truly hope the money raised will help those affected to start to rebuild and move forward after this unimaginable tragedy. We are hoping to continue to look for other ways we as a school and community can help support those affected and will of course keep you updated on any future efforts.
Thank you all once again.
Jennifer Murshid,
Chair of Governors.

Strike Confirmation
Tue 28 Feb 202320th February 2023
Strike Date- Update .
Dear Parents and Carers,
Unfortunately , it appears that no compromise has been reached between The National Education Union and the Government and it therefore looks likely that next weeks proposed strike will take place.
I have carried out a risk assessment and unfortunately have had to make the decision that the school will be fully closed for all pupils on Tuesday 28th February . The vast majority of teachers at Kingsley are members of the union who are carrying out the strike so it is highly likely that there will be no teachers in work on that day as this was the situation on the last strike day.
The building will still be open for other staff who will come to work as usual, but we do not have the capacity to teach or safely look after children.
I will continue to risk assess each strike day as they come up, as circumstances may change, and let you know before each one what the school’s plans are. However, it seems that other Teaching unions may decide to re ballot and there could be further impact in March and as we move into the Summer term. This is immensely frustrating for everyone. At the moment there are proposed strikes also planned for 15th and 16th March, although not yet confirmed, I think it wise to prepare for this.
Teachers do not lightly take this action, indeed many of them will suffer financially, and they all realise the potential impact on children and families. I sincerely hope that some agreement is reached soon. I know we all want well run, and sufficiently funded schools, so that EVERY pupil has the chance to be succeed. This is the crux of the matter.
Please ensure that you also keep your mobile phone numbers up to date with school, in case of any last minute messages which may need to go out via our text messaging service. However, unless things change, all children should remain at home on February 28.
Kind regards,
Alison Whittaker, Head Teacher.
